SUPAR students competed in the Milwaukee regional tournament of Destination Imagination on March 27, 2010. Competing in the Do or DI event, our team took first place and advances on to the state tournament in Stevens Point on April 17. S UPAR team members competing at the regional competition were Alberto, Jacques, Jalisa, Beth, amd Mercedes. See our photo gallery from the event.
The SUPAR team prepared before the competition in creating improvisational skits on ten "threatened things," incorporating specific stock characters and reacting to surprise challenges assigned at the competition. Prior to the competition, the team researched the threatened things and practiced developing story lines during a seven-minute prep period.
At the competition, the SUPAR team drew Glaciers as the threatened thing. The highlight of the skit came after Mercedes revealed the surprise element to the rest of the team. Taking on the role of a radio announcer, she said: "This news just in. You have caused a massive series of storms hitting coastal regions." Jacques, thinking on his feet, immediately became the storm, whirling through the room like a cyclone.
The team also competed in the Instant Challenge. In that event, no information was provided in advance. The students were given four minutes to prepare a five-minute skit on a topic announced just before the prep period. They were given some standard household items to fashion into props. The team had everyone in the room roaring with laughter as Alberto took on the role of a naughty little boy and Jalisa as his exasperated mother.
Destination Imagination is "a community-based, school friendly program that builds participants' creativity, problem solving, and teamwork in enjoyable and meaningful ways" (Destination Imagination Wisconsin homepage).
